Big News for 2011!

Hello, Yarnies!

After four wonderful years as “NH Knitting Mama”, I have decided to change the name of my yarn shop to “Sunflower Yarns.”

Why the change?
I’m excited to share with you a big reason which contributed to my decision to make the change. My family and I are in the process of looking to move to a different part of the country. When I picked “NH Knitting Mama” all those years ago, I never imagined the possibility of moving away from NH. I decided it was time to change to something that does not geographically link me to a part of the country.

Why Sunflower Yarns?
Since I was a little girl, I have always loved sunflowers. I wanted to pick something that I could identify with, and it seemed fitting to be linked with something that I love so much.

What about listing stash in Ravelry?
Ravelry will still allow you to enter your stash - it doesn’t matter if your yarn tag says “NH Knitting Mama” or “Sunflower Yarns” - seach by either name and my yarn categories will come up.

What about the NH Knitting Mama Yarn Shop?
This shop is still up and running until the migration is complete. This will be a few more days. After the inventory is removed, if you type in the web address for this site, it will automatically direct you to Sunflower Yarns. This will give my existing customers time to change their links and get used to the new name.

What Next?
Over the next several days, you’ll notice that things that once said “NH Knitting Mama” will be changed to “Sunflower Yarns.” If you check out the new website for Sunflower Yarns, there will be links to the new Facebook, Twitter, and mailing list sign up. This blog is going to eventually go away as the new site will have a blog integrated into it.

Please take a second to add your email address to the new mailing list. I will not be migrating the existing mailing list over to my new mailing list service as I don’t want my customers to be confused if they are not yet aware of the name change.

I’d like to thank you all for your support over the past years. I’m so excited for this change, and I’m looking forward to bringing you some gorgeous yarns this year! Wishing you a happy and prosperous 2011…

Grab Bag Mania ~

I don't know about you, but I'm a sucker for a grab bag. I love the surprise of it - the wonder - the excitement. The last few weeks I have been getting ready for all that goes with "year end" for a store, and put some great grab bags together! Each one contains at least one hank of yarn, and depending on how many "extras" you want, depends on which size you choose.

Yes, that's right - it's that time! The November Simple Pleasures Packages are on sale in the shop. They will be winter-themed (NOT any particular holiday), and include a hank of yarn from my Durham (DK) line in an exclusive colorway. I've also teamed up with Alecia from MadBird to have an exclusive goodie as well!

I've started doing a weekly update to the shop, being mostly on Tuesdays. I've had great feedback doing it this way, and it gives everyone the opportunity to head over and see what is new. Hi, all!

I hope everyone is enjoying those last days of hot weather OR the first days of fall. There are lots of exciting things going on here at NHKM HQ.

There have been a lot of new yarns added to the shop in the last couple weeks in all weights and colors.

I've added more of the "Freedom" line (bamboo/merino blend). I was able to make a pair of socks with this base, and they are wearing like steel! I'm really impressed with this base. Also had a sample shawl knit up with it, and it has awesome stitch definition.

The "Farmington" line had some additions as well. This is a true work-horse yarn, as it is a 3 ply superwash merino. And, at approx. 490 yards per hank, the price can't be beat.

I also added a few hanks of the "Windham" line. This worsted weight merino is strong, warm, and wears well. There will be lots more added through the month of October.

Another addition for October is my "Treat Bags" which are available with or without yarn. Certainly a fun way for you to enhance your stash!

The details of the KAL/CAL have been announced on my Ravelry group. This month we will be doing a hat/mitten set, but with options for you! Check out the details at this link - there is also a coupon for you to use as a thank you for participating!

Behind the 8 Ball

And by behind, and August being the 8th month of the year, I mean that I am behind. I'm not ready. The month has rolled in much too quickly.

Today my son started his first "official" year of homeschooling. In NH, we have to declare that we are a homeschooling family the year that a child is 6 during the month of September. So, this is the year. This, my friends, I was not ready for. Paperwork wise and all that jazz, yes... but emotionally? No. I mean, seven short years ago I was pregnant and already waddling around like an oversized penguin. But now? I have a SIX year old. That started school. Here he is in his "classroom" at my parent's house, where he does a majority of his work.

There are several other things that I have not been able to give my time to. Watching the Red Sox is one of them. And this pains me, especially since I have this:

I'm also behind on reading my favorite blogs, listening to podcasts, and updating my yarn shop. But, with fall approaching quickly, I will catch up. A couple nights of my insomnia kicking in and I'll be back in the saddle with all the things I am on top of. But for now, I'm behind the 8 ball.

July in a Jiffy

This month has been flying by for me. I've been knitting a lot, as it is a good thing to do in 100 degree weather when you're in the house with the A/C on. Finished a shawl, socks, a stuffed toy, a wrap, and a baby bag. Also a couple pairs of socks.

Other than that? Nothing to report. Here's a pic of the latest socks, which was a stash buster project:

You Say Ketchup, I Say Catch Up

There's so much going on, yet nothing going on. I run in high gear all the time, and it is not often that I don't have many things going on at a time. Here's an idea of the past couple weeks.

I was elected to be the area 10 (Manchester area) representative for the New Hampshire Homeschool Coalition.
I have read the first seven books of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series in the last two weeks. I love to read, and this series is incredible. The characters are amazing and the storyline is well thought out. I haven't been able to put them down - obviously! There is something about vampires...
While I am doing my normal daily stuff, my iPod has been working overtime. Between Muse and Death Cab for Cutie, my ears have been happy!
Knitting. Always knitting. Right now I'm working on the Clapotis. Here's a pic of the progress:

While doing all that, my family is always all around - which I wouldn't have any other way. We're big multi-taskers in our house, so we work hard so we can play hard!

Summer has arrived in NH, so we're off to the backyard to swim. What have you been up to so far this summer?

A few weeks ago, we yo-yo'd down to North Carolina. For us that is a 14-16 hour drive, which gave us a lot of time to listen to music. After exhausting my musical mixes on my iPod Touch, hubby took out his iPhone and put on Pandora. Seeing as I am a huge music fan, this website is appealing to me because you can type in a band or a song that you like and it will make a music station for you out of songs that are like the criteria you enter in the beginning. Just try it!

Anyway, I have become a Muse-head! I first heard them on Guitar Hero 3, with their song "Knights of Cydonia." I then had my ears grabbed by them again with their song "Supermassive Black Hole" on the Twilight soundtrack. And, thanks to Pandora, I now have a pretty awesome Muse channel on my feed. For more than a week now they are all I have listened to.

Now that you know what is in my ears, I'll give you the tour of the weekend. I went to the NH Sheep & Wool Festival in Hopkinton, NH. What a vast difference in weather from the MD Sheep & Wool the week before! MD was in the 90's. NH was in the 50's. I have to say I prefer the hot weather! We were not at the festival for very long as we were cold and the vendors did not seem to have a lot. Don't know if they didn't bring a lot or if they were just that picked over. I tend to doubt they were picked over, though, because Saturday was so rainy and miserable that I can't imagine the festival was that crazy busy on Saturday - but I digress.

We did see lots of beautiful fiber animals, and it was great to spend time with my family. Here's a couple pics for you.

This week will prove to be a busy one, as the Simple Pleasures Packages for May are on sale. I increased the number available, so there are still some left. Be sure to grab one, as there are only a couple days left to get one (last month many folks missed out).

MD Sheep & Wool

Where to even start!?

I have wanted to go to the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival for years, and after a couple nudges from Natalie (host of the wonderful Bark n Knit podcast!) we were all systems go for the trip.

The trip was wonderful from beginning to end. I'm going to give you some highlights, so grab your favorite cuppa and get ready for a fun post, which will be photo heavy!

We arrived at the festival at 10:00 on Saturday morning. This is one of the largest fiber festivals anywhere, so I had to take a photo of the parking lot/field to give you an idea of the scale of this event - and this was only in ONE direction. There was an equal amount of cars behind me, and the parking was also across the road to get in, too. Hundreds and hundreds of cars. This doesn't show the tour bus parking, either!

Here is a pic before we started to melt from the 90+ degree heat. We ate and stayed hydrated throughout the day, believe me!

The first line of business was the Podcast Meet & Greet, as Natalie was a participant and of course we wanted to support her and the other fab podcasters!

Next was going to see some of the delightful fiber animals. They're all so sweet!

We also checked out the auction that was going on. There were amazing looms and wheels there!

We attended the Fiber Crawl after party, hosted by Guido of the "It's a Purl, Man" podcast. We had a great time!

On Sunday we went back to the festival for a little while, but we were all leaving to travel home by the afternoon, so I definitely took it easy so I wasn't sweaty and tired for the long drive. I enjoyed taking photos, visiting with friends, and taking in the Sheep Dog Show as well as the Sheep to Shawl competition.

This was truly an amazing weekend, despite the 90+ degree heat and the huge crowds. Nothing beats spending time with people that keep you inspired on a daily basis!

Full Circle

Things around here have come full circle lately. The little dot com that could is really taking off and providing me with a real life income, for which I feel blessed. This week has been my most successful yet, and to say that I am humbled is an understatement. This dream that started back in 2007 has really become a reality, and if you read this blog, it is highly likely that you had a part in that. Thank you.

Speaking of circles, I've been knitting on the Hemlock Ring blanket, and it is round. SO pretty, and what a joy to knit. Here is a progress picture, though I can't lay it flat due to it being on the needles, but you can see a bit of the pattern here:

Like A Yo-Yo

That was us. On Friday, we left NH for the weekend and went to North Carolina. We came home on Monday. Just like a Yo-Yo...

Um, is it a secret anymore that we are looking to move to North Carolina? No, I didn't think so. The family knows, and I think most of our friends know. If I forgot to tell anyone, it wasn't intentional. This move will happen hopefully in the next 18 months. We're looking to move to the Raleigh area, and were able to investigate several towns while we were there this weekend. Not to bore you with all the details, but we like the town of Cary a whole lot.

I also like the fact that I'll be living so close to one of my favorite people on the planet, Michelle. There are not a whole lotta people that I feel like I connect with like her. Friends like her are rare in this world!

I also got to spend quality time with hubby. I think sometimes we all get lost in our everyday lives and forget to have the conversations that are so important... you know, the "Hey, I know we don't get to talk to you a lot because of kids, house, life... but you're still #1" kind of conversations.

Yes, with a 16 hour drive in each direction there were a lot of great conversations like that. I feel full. I feel happy. And, after the last few years of loss and sadness, it feels great to be whole again.

Let's see, what else is new? Well, I have been knitting quite a bit, but no FO's to show right now. I've been writing, too. Spending tons of time with my son, playing baseball in the backyard and enjoying life through his eyes. All good things...

Hmmm, do any of you know where that title would have come from?

This weekend has been absolutely fantastic. We did a bunch of yardwork, the reaped our reward:

I sat on that for hours and knit, knit, knit.

I had intention of dyeing yarn this weekend, but was actually able to decompress and spend lots of quality time with the family. This was a God-send, because I am so keyed up and excited about life all the time that I rarely relax and recharge. Here are a couple colorways that I have listed on my site. They sold out IMMEDIATELY, but I am taking orders as they have proven to be very popular already.

Virtual Message in a Bottle

I found out some horrible news about a friend in a very round-about kind of way. Right after I did my last post about my life being stranger than fiction, I am now 100% convinced that it is.

Truth is, this news has had me reeling. I cannot do anything right now because of crazy extenuating circumstances, which is not my style, because usually I am the person that is not afraid of jumping in and helping someone. It would compromise someone else and I cannot do that.

So, I am sending out these feelings in a virtual message in a bottle. I know I am not anonymous to those that read this blog, but perhaps putting these thoughts out there cosmically will help line up the stars to make the situation better for those involved. I'm sorry I cannot elaborate more than this. I myself hate cryptic stuff like this, but it is the only way I can get it out at all right now.

Aside from knitting this guy, I've been writing, writing, writing. Also listening to music. I've made several new music playlists for my iPod, so depending on my mood, it is really helping me to write. Perhaps people close to me that have been watching my life for a long time already knew this, but as I read things that are going on the "paper" - well, laptop - I realize my life really is stranger than fiction in some ways. How? Well, maybe someday you'll get to read it for yourself.

Accept The Good

It seems that every year in March I have some kind of realization about life. I've been doing this blog for a few years now, and looking back, I can see that each year around this time I have creative energy, a lot of deep thinking, and a desire to make a difference.

Do you ever read a book, hear a song, watch a movie, get involved in a conversation, or see something in the world that you know you were meant to experience, but you don't know why at that exact moment? I walk through much of my life like this, cataloging this stuff for the part of life's puzzle that I know I won't be working on until a later time.

I have been able to connect one of these experiences recently and it was only a matter of a couple days for me to do it.

In my quest to find some new movies to stimulate some new fodder to think about, I came across the movie "Things We Lost in the Fire." Benicio Del Toro is one of my favorite actors. If you've ever seen his work, you know that he is a master at less-is-more acting, and leaves interpretation of the character to the viewer. This is exactly the kind of movie that I like - one that gives me the freedom to mull it over for a long time.

The synopsis of the movie is that Halle Berry's husband (David Duchovny) dies, and her friendship grows with Duchovny's best friend, Del Toro, who is a heroin addict. One of the final messages of the movie is "Accept The Good"....

After a couple days of thinking about this movie so much, I was thinking about my friend, Zack, that died a couple years ago. Like Duchovny's character in the movie, Zack's death had a way of bringing many people in my life back together again, and I am so appreciative of that. But, moreso, I am appreciative of how much I appreciate so many things in life more than I ever thought possible.

I've really learned to "accept the good" in situations, and not focus on the bad anymore. As hard as it is to believe, there is always something good that comes from something bad. I'd like to think that all this connection is a sort of message from Zack, to accept the good, as that is what he is hoping for for all of us that love him and are left on this side of the clouds. I miss him everyday, and I am in awe of how much his passing has taught me, and continues to teach me, everyday of my life.

So, to lighten up this post a bit, I have definitely been accepting the good. Lots of extremely exciting things happening right now that I am SO appreciative of!

We're heading to North Carolina in a couple weeks to see dear friends and check out the area, as we're considering moving there in the next couple years.

I'm heading to Maryland in May to go to the MD Sheep & Wool festival, and meeting/rooming with my girls Michelle and Natalie. I have wanted to go to this festival for years, and when we were all able to coordinate within a couple days, I knew it was a sign that it was meant to happen. These girls mean so much to me, and I can't wait to spend time with them as we are scattered up and down the east coast. I'm also hoping to meet up with a few more of my fiber friends that I live too far from!

At the suggestion of another fiber sister, Amy, I've also joined Script Frenzy in an effort to get some of my stories out of my mind and on paper. I am SO excited to do this challenge, as even if I never share it with anyone, it is just another form of expression that I have wanted to try in my life.

Other than all this stuff, there has been LOTS of music. Pandora, anyone? I'm also knitting a pig. You'll see soon enough.

It's been a couple weeks since I have posted. All kinds of things have been cookin' here at NHKM HQ, including my laptop! So, while we worked on restoring order (thankfully all my files were backed up!), I used the time to be in the studio dyeing up more yarn.

Most of the hanks in the photo are now in the shop. Now thru Monday 1/25, purchase ANY two hanks (do not have to be the same), and I'll throw in a free pattern!

2009 Wrap-Up // New KAL

This is the time of year that people reflect on their accomplishments and set goals for the new year. Well, I am certainly no exception to this rule. I love this time of year...

I spent time this weekend getting myself organized on paper. I bought this great notebook that is called "The Organizer" - and it has a big spot for "project planning notes" and a margin for "project action notes"... well, this is right up my alley, and hasn't left my hands much except to knit.

Speaking of knitting, I have an FO. I am calling them my "Contemporary Monkey Socks." (Ravelry Link)

Now, can we talk about Ravelry for a minute? Knitting and crocheting friends, if you aren't on this site, I highly recommend it. Not only is it a great place to organize your projects/yarn/needles/etc., but the forums are so much fun, and there is a group for every interest you can think of.

That being said, I'd love to invite you all to my NH Knitting Mama group. I have had such a great time getting to know the guys and gals in the group, and we're starting a lace knit-along with a yarn prize. So, consider yourself invited and join the fun. We'd love to see you there!

Latest Happenings and a Contest

We just came back to New Hampshire after a wonderful week at Walt Disney World in Florida. This is the second year in a row that we had beautiful weather while we were there, and the vacation was more needed than I thought.

Now that we're back, I feel excited for the holidays, and inspired to create some exciting colorways. But first? I must sell off some of the inventory I have on hand.

Yarn Dreams Become Realities

A few yarn dreams of mine have become realities. That sounds so dramatic, but it is true!

Dream to Reality #1:
I have been coveting this particular hank of yarn on Jessi's shop. She had a sale a couple weekends ago, and I grabbed it! SO EXCITED. I'm going to make my first pair of Monkey Socks with it (Ravelry Link).

Dream to Reality #2:
I had this lonely little hank of yarn in my basket. I had dyed it a while ago, and for some reason I just couldn't part with it. It had to be for me. It finally told me what it wanted to be. A hat! (Ravelry Link)

Dream to Reality #3:
I worked feverishly this past weekend in the studio. The muse took over my body and I dyed for hours on end. It is ALL for sale in the shop now, but here is a sneak peek.

Cyber Sunday... and Monday...

This week went by in a flash. Spent the early part of the week trying to figure out what I was doing. Ever have that happen? I was busy, and doing stuff, but things had no order to them. No rhyme or reason. Thankfully we had a holiday this week or I would have been upset at myself!

I did knit. I'm addicted to these fingerless mitts.

I made another pair, and have another pair on the needles. I even joined a group on Ravelry for people that are addicted to knitting them. I did make one pair for myself last week, but all these other ones are gifts.

Monday Monday

After several false starts due to pattern errata, I have finished the 5th Avenue Infinity Scarf (Ravelry Link).

I'm doing a bit of stash knitting right now to support the participants in the NH Knitting Mama knit/crochet along. The details are here (again, on Ravelry), but it gives you a chance to win some NHKM yarn and some other goodies, too. There is still plenty of time! The knit/crochet along doesn't end until 12/31/09...

Plans for the week include getting ready for our much needed family vacation that is coming up, as well as eating lots of Turkey. And, do I need to mention that there will be a whole lotta knitting? Didn't think so...

Fingerless Mitts are OffTN!

WIP report

Just checking in to show you my WIP. I'm making the Basic Fingerless Mitts (linky takes you to the Ravelry page). These are a nice, easy, and quick knit. I'm using NH Knitting Mama yarn as it is part of the NHKM knit/crochet along. Feel free to join us! There is opportunity to win prizes. Plans for the weekend? We're going to the coast to see a friend that is a vendor at a craft show, then exploring the wilds of Portsmouth, NH. Sunday we're taking a day at home to relax and do some last chores before winter sets in.

How many days?

44. As of right now, November 11th, there are 44 days until Chrismas. Now, I know not everyone celebrates the same holiday as I do, but for me, 44 days is not a lot of time to get going on any gift-knitting that I want to do.

What have I been knitting? I just cast on a pair of fingerless mitts - for myself. Since I am self-employed, and at home during the day now, I am trying not to turn up the heat everytime I feel a little chilly. Sure, I look silly in my hat, scarf, and soon fingerless mitts, but in New England you do all you can not to turn that heat up because it is so much darn money.

Another good thing about the fingerless mitts? They are my knit/crochet along project. Check out the details on the NHKM group on Ravelry if you're interested.

How about a little Merino/Cashmere/Nylon blend to satisfy your urge for eye candy? There is some loaded in the shop. This is already proving to be a good seller so grab it while you can!

Greetings from NHKM HQ, where we are having a quiet morning of pajamas, coffee, and relaxation time after a busy and successful first show on Saturday. Many of you know that I participated in the bi-annual "STUD - Shop 'Til U Drop" show in Bedford, NH. This is for NH small businesses to showcase their wares and give people the opportunity to get some of their holiday shopping done in a fun environment. There is also a show in May for Mother's Day weekend, and I was invited back already, which is a good thing! SO - PICS! Yes, you want pics.

There were many family, friends, and new customers that came by the booth, and it was fantastic to talk to people and have a great time!

The last few months have been awesome. Things are falling into place here at Knitting Mama HQ, so there are things to tell you about.

Last night I was able to launch the new NH Knitting Mama online store. I've been able to expand my product line to be more than yarn, so be sure to surf around. Hours In A Day

Lately it seems like the common topic of conversations I have had with people is how there is not enough hours in a day. I agree. It seems the more you want to do something, the more hours it adds to the project.

So what have I been doing the last month or so? All the things that go into a growing business. November will prove to be a fantastic month! The full NH Knitting Mama website will launch at the beginning of the month. I'm also going to be doing a show!

Mark your calendars. Saturday, November 7th, I'll be at "STUD" - Shop 'Til U Drop - which is a great event to get done holiday shopping, as well as treating yourself. The event will be held at Bedford High School in Bedford, NH, from 9-5. Free babysitting services and refreshments are included, and there are over 40 local vendors to choose from. I'll have LOTS of yarn, patterns, crafting supplies, and other unique goodies to choose from - lots of which will not be on the website - so stop by! I'd love to see you!

Changes

I've been thinking about the last couple years, and all the changes to the online world.

When I started blogging, we blogged, and put pics, links to each other, and all that good stuff on our blog. We all ran contests, Memes, and tagged each other for various awards.

My how the days have changed. Now I personally maintain a blog, Facebook, Twitter, Ravelry, MySpace (though not often on there), and Etsy. And, I'm in the middle of working on launching my very own shop at www.nhknittingmama.com, and will carry not only my own hand-dyed yarn, but fiber wash, stitch markers, knitting needles, and other goodies for the fiber artist toolbox.

I encourage you to stop over at the new site and look around. Sure, it links you to the places you know you can find me, but there is some new yarns listed, and you can link right to them from there.

The past few months have been exhilarating! I made the decision that I will bring NH Knitting Mama to the next level, and have been developing my new site. The homepage went "live" this evening, so I invite you all to check it out! Life is What Happens When You're Living It

And we've been living it!

I don't know what happened to my knitting mojo, but it is gone. Just like that. After the flurry of projects I was doing - at least one a week - my mojo completely disappeared. I know it sounds stupid, but I think it is all over having to do a buttonhole. Yes, seriously. You knitters understand. Sometimes you hit a point in a project where you have to do something that you just don't like to do. Usually it is finishing. But, for some reason, this time it is a buttonhole.

I decided to start the February Lady Sweater. I love the sweater, I know it would look fabulous on me, and I bought yarn in a great color. I knit the first 3 rows, and WHAMMO. Buttonhole time. I followed the tutorial in the pattern, but crappers, I just can't do it right now. So, the sweater is in a heap in the knitting bag.

Now, if you know me in real life, or even a little bit in blogland, you know I love the Boston Red Sox. Yes, it is that time again - baseball season. And can you believe, we were lucky to be able to score 4 tickets to one of the luxury boxes, and Poppy was able to experience his first game.

I've also been doing a lot of work on Poppy's homeschool curriculum, as well as getting more involved with a couple local homeschool groups. A couple weeks ago we went to the NH coast.

A Crafty Week

I didn't mean to be so crafty this week, I really didn't. But, sometimes we don't have control of the creative urges, and we've gotta run with it. I was poking around on some of the blogs I visit, and saw this on Knit 'N Tonic. My mission was clear. I needed to make some of these "Tie-dye" eggs myself. I saved the link from the Martha Stewart show, and set off to Goodwill to find some silk ties.

After a successful mission for ties, we tried this last night. My eggs were not as vibrant as I had hoped, but I am already thinking of ways to do it different/better/successful next year.

Today we kept the mojo going by planting our seeds for the veggie garden. Poppy did most of the work, and was quite proud that he did this himself.

Knit-athon!

I've been knitting up a storm the last couple weeks. Mostly this weekend. Michelle gifted me the Twilight book series on CD's so I could listen. WOW - talk about knitting heaven. Now I can "read" and knit at the same time. Needless to say that I have been getting a lot done!

Chan had gifted me some Tofutsies a while back, and I made socks. After Michelle's visit a few weeks ago, I was inspired try a ribbed pattern. I picked Wise Hilda's Ribbed Sock pattern. Lulu likes them!

Once the socks were done, I decided that I wanted to knit up a quick Easter gift. I did one of my Candy Bags...

Today I knit up the Windy City Hat. I LOVE this project, and the pattern was very well written. Kudos to the author!

I'm still enjoying knitting from my stash. Let's face it, many of us try to knit from the stash at the beginning of the year, then all hell breaks loose when we find a good sale or we find something that we *must* knit and we don't have the yarn. For now, I've managed to only knit from stash in 2009. Plus, my yarn organizer I bought (see this post) is REALLY enjoyable because I can see and pet my stash anytime I want. And, it is decorative and looks lovely in my dining room. I'm really happy with it!

Not sure what will go on the needles next. Not sure about the dye pot, either, but when the knitting muse sleeps, the dyeing muse surely wakes.

Dream In Color Shrug

I had my first FO of 2009 ~ the Dream in Color Shrug. I highly recommend this pattern! If you know me as a knitter, you know I have an acute fear of lace knitting, and this was a great project to take on as an intro to lace - the pattern was easy, and the yarn was thicker (I used some NH Knitting Mama in worsted weight). Gifted it to my Mom for her birthday, and it looks fantastic on her!

I also found a Petal Cloth that was 80% done in a random bin of yarn that I just cleaned out. So, I finished that this afternoon.

I am so happy with my new yarn storage system (from this post). It has really helped me to get my stuff organized, and helped me to "rediscover" all the goodies that I have in my stash!

Next on the agenda is to seam together a sweater that I made for Poppy (I know, Michelle! I'm a wimp when it comes to finish work!), and I also want to dye some more yarn!

I've been slaving over the dyepots. Since my lungs have been better, and the doc said that he suspects it was a lung infection and nothing to do with dyeing yarn (I wear an industrial respirator), I have been playing with yarn every chance I get!

Isn't it great to start fresh?

I don't know about you, but 2008 was "iffy" at best for me. It started out good, then around March I felt like I was in a bit of an avalanche emotionally for most of the rest of the year. Oh, sure, there were still lots of good times, but the clouds were still there. The holidays were great, though, and that makes it easier to move forward.

Now we are at that fresh start/new beginning point. I'm all for that.

2008 Wrap Up

Hello, my bloggy friends!

I was talking to Michelle, and she suggested I do an update to my blog. Not a bad idea.

The past 5 months have been quite challenging for me. Aside from some personal issues, I also developed a major lung infection when I came home from The Knitters Day Out in PA. I ended up in the ER because I was hardly able to breathe. After a few months of this, and a lung function test a week ago, my doctor is exploring the possibility of asthma. I'm now on an inhaler 2X/day, which seems to be helping.

The long and short of this, is that it is not safe for me to continue to dye yarn right now. I do wear a respirator, but it's not recommended that I do anything to push my lungs to have further problems than they do. I may be able to continue in the future, but honestly I feel pretty nervous to do that now.

I'm not sure of the future of NHKM Yarns right now. I have some other ideas that I'd like to explore, but for now I will not be dyeing.

I have A LOT of base yarn in my house right now, and I am going to compile a list and sell it off. So, if there is something that you're looking for, let me know and I'll see if I have it. I have a lot of cones of various weights, and of course some that is already put up into hanks.

As far as my blog, I will continue to put up an update once in a while, but I have found that the blog had become a bit of a burden to maintain. It took me a couple hours a day to update mine, and read/comment on all the ones I was reading. I hope you aren't offended! I'm just trying to simplify my life right now.

A warm hello to all my blog friends!

I guess you could say that I am going through one of the longest rough patches of my life. I hate to be all dramatic in life - so I drop out for a while. Hence, a few months of silence.

I have stayed connected with several of you through Facebook (join if you haven't - much easier than blogging!)

Knitting - YES. I have been working on a roll-edge sweater for Poppy. Have had a bit of start-itis. Working on a couple Christmas gifts, too.

Dyeing - NO. Have had a raging case of Bronchitis that is kicking my butt! No way I could be around the fumes right now. The dyeing muse is coming around, so it is a bit torturous.

Ravelry: Well, if you knit/crochet/spin/dye and even sew, this is a place you should be. And, I have been on Ravelry for many many hours as of late. Case in point? This chart (you must be on Ravelry to see this). I have posted wayyyyyy too much.

Red Sox: If you're not a baseball fan, feel free to skip this paragraph, but if you have been following - well, YOWSERS! Manny Ramirez was traded to L.A. today. I have to say, I am quite happy about this for many reasons. He wanted to go, and we need someone who is devoted to the team as we head toward the playoffs. We've been losing a lot lately, so if we want to be on the field in October we need to step it up. I've been watching my baseball religiously, and usually they win every game I watch, but something has been amiss.

Dyeing: After some help from a friend on Ravelry, I now have a terrific new contraption to wind my yarn from cone to hank. This has really renewed my enthusiasm for dyeing and getting my shop going again, and I'm swimming in yarn that is prepped and ready to dye. I did a small session this past weekend, and this is for sale: 80% Merino, 20% Bamboo - "Eggplant Patch"

1. One of my best friends from CA recently visited.
2. Big Daddy, Poppy, and I are going to Cape Cod in a couple weeks for a weekend.

5. Got my class confirmation for the Knitter's Day Out. I'll get to spend the weekend with Chan, Michelle, and Anita. Yes, you can be jealous - I would be!

I have received 3 packages in the mail in the last two days, and as I sat here trying to think of a clever name for my blogpost, and with the contents of these packages before me, I realized they all have "home" as a theme.

At the end of May, Miss Lulu Ladybug came to live with us. I immediately rushed to Anita's shop to place an order for stitch markers, as if you wanted themed ones that are TOTALLY ADORABLE, this is the place to go!

I also received some stitch makers an a couple washcloths from Miss Surviving, and they have an obvious "home" theme!

The last package (certainly not least!) came from my dear friend, Alison. Way back when I started dyeing yarn, Alison bought one of the first skeins I dyed. Well, that skein has made it's way home, but all grown up. Oh, friends, I can't tell you how special this gift is to me. Thank you, Alison, from the bottom of my heart.

Newport, Rhode Island

One of the things I love about having a blog is sharing the things that I love in life, and getting to savor the experience a little bit more by writing about it.

I love to travel. I love getting out of the safety of my everyday world and seeing new things. My husband and I have been lucky enough to do quite a bit of travelling, and making the most of business trips - this one brings us to Newport, Rhode Island.

When I told people where I was going this week, folks that had never been there wrinkled their nose and said "have fun with that" - but the people that HAD been there were jealous and telling me how wonderful it was. I'm glad I didn't let the attitude of others ruin the idea of Rhode Island for me. IT IS GORGEOUS HERE!

We were lucky enough to get a view of Newport Harbor from our hotel room. You can also see on of the famous Newport mansions in this pic.

I spent a few hours of my day yesterday catching up on favorite TV shows in front of my window knitting.What am I working on? LACE - YES, LACE!

Big Daddy told me a few weeks ago that he had a surprise planned for me down in Newport. So, I've been curious to see what he had up his sleeve, because his surprises are always good. Check - this - out. He rented a Vespa scooter!He drove, I held on tight. We drove down all the coastal roads of Newport to see the mansions. This one is my favorite - the Marble House.

We went out for some fantastic food (lobster, steamers, crepes!), window-shopped at some really neat stores, and had a great time together. And, we still have another day here! I'm so happy to live in New England!

Putting My Thoughts Together

So we had this nice long weekend this past weekend. It was great. Pretty decent weather. We did lots of fun things (BBQ's, camp fires, swimming) - but I also did a lot of thinking about things, and I'd like to share these thoughts with you.

When I started my Etsy shop, I had hopes of being able to make a comfortable income, and eventually leave my job so I could stay home and homeschool Poppy. I could also dye yarn.

Well......... it's not working out that way!

Part of the reason is that homeschooling takes up a LOT of time. Time that I am willing to spend so my child can have the best education I can provide. You homeschooling Moms know what I'm talking about. Writing curriculum, doing the lessons, and spending some fun "down-time" together totals a lot of hours.

There is also the issue of my job. The one I go to for 7 hours each day outside of my home. The one that puts food on the table. With the economy the way it is, I am terrified at the thought of not having that steady income.

The other thing that is keeping me from dyeing yarn?

KNITTING! Serioiusly, it is always a choice between knitting or dyeing for me. I think there is a lot of guilt when I knit, because I have cones and cones of yarn in my studio that are waiting to be dyed up, but when the muse is not there, it is only because the knitting muse is in town.

Those were my thoughts over the weekend. Getting it all figured out so I could make some peace with it all. You all have read this blog long enough to know that I am one that takes a long time to make peace with things. It is important to me to feel comfortable with things being different than I expected.

I've come to the conclusion that NH Knitting Mama Yarns is exactly what I need it to be. It's a creative outlet for me, and small enough that I can keep up with the demands of regular stock as well as all the custom orders (a majority of my business is custom!) It's also been rewarding to get to know so many of my customers.

Seeing as I did run with my knitting muse this weekend, I'll share a pic of this hand towel I knit up for my folk's camp. The pattern is a basic feather and fan pattern with decreasing at the top. I added a button so it could be hung on the cabinet handle.

Fiber Focus

My mind has been quite focused on fiber arts this past week. The other night I sat down and made some decisions about which event I would go to: Stitches East or Knitter's Day Out. At Stitches East I would be able to have access to many fiber artists at the market they have, and I'd see many bloggy friends, but the cost of the classes are pricey! Also, flying from New England can be sketchy that time of the year (snow).

I opted to go to Knitter's Day Out. Not only can I afford to go with the low registration fee, but I get to spend the weekend with THREE of my bloggy friends - Chan, Michelle, and Anita. I have been excited all week... September seems like forever from now! I can't wait to spend time with them, and be giddy about yarn with like-minded folk.

Lately I find myself gravitating toward hand-spun yarns. Does this mean I will be learning to spin soon? Probably not yet, but I'm loving all the yummy stuff I've been finding on Etsy. Have you seen the shop Mud Creek? Kari has some incredible yarns. She also does custom order AND does as much as she can for the environment (see her shop policies). Definitely the kind of shop I want to support.

I mention all this about hand-spun, and I must tell you, I have a project in mind. I was looking through the Winter '07 Interweave Knits, and found the pattern for "Logan River Wrap." As I don't know that they would appreciate me using their pic, I am putting THIS LINK to the project page in Ravelry. As soon as I get some hand-spun, this project will be on the needles!

There has been a bit of Etsy shopping going on. A recent acquisition is from Jenn of "Rhymes With Socks" - these sweet Sand Dollar cards. I have borrowed the pic from her shop, and strongly encourage you to check out her goodies! These cards are terrific quality, and I'm sure she would do custom requests.

Friday fill-in (which is becoming a popular feature of many blogs that I read!), I will do the Friday "fill you in"... on what has been going on this week in the life of NH Knitting Mama.

Well, the sale has been a great success. I have been able to clean out a lot of goodies from the studio, and managed to bring my Paypal balance up! If there is something you're interested in, I am willing to negotiate prices. I'd really like to find a good home for this stuff!

Speaking of finding a good home, Miss Lulu has been a joyful addition to the house. Poppy has had some adjustment issues - I'm sure it's much like having a new baby - but I suppose you can say that Lulu is a new baby. She sleeps with this teddy bear, and kneads it like bread.

We did have some other excitement today. My Mom called to say she had a turtle in the yard, and seeing as we live a half mile from my folks, Poppy and I jumped in the car and went over to see it. I ended up picking it up and moving it back to the woods where there is a swamp that it probably came from. We've been getting a lot of summer thunder showers, so I'm sure he wandered too far from the woods and thought he was still in the marsh as it's been so wet.

I do have an FO! Jessi had gifted this yarn to me, and I thought it would make a fun and funky scarf. I just did a basic "knit every row" deal, because the yarn speaks for itself. It's Great to be a New England Sports Fan!

Last night I had the opportunity to go to Fenway Park with my Dad and a close friend to see the Red Sox game. The Sox lost, and there was an hour-long rain delay, but we got to see the Celtics and the trophy! The whole team came to the game and were honored at Fenway.

My two guys decided to cut their hair the other night. Can you tell who is who? The only way I can is that one is a little bit taller than the other.

Lulu thought that Poppy had given her a rose to hold between her teeth...

We went downtown to do this new attaction that has been built over the last couple years called the Riverwalk. It's this path along the Merrimack River that is paved, and even has a footbridge from one side to the other. It was pretty awesome, and gave us a couple hours worth of exploration on Sunday morning. Poppy was nervous about getting his pants wet, so this pic cracks me up, but you get an idea of the view.

I Know This Much Is True

This is going to be a LONG & DEEP post.

If you've been reading this blog for a while, you probably know that one of my close friends, Zachary Tellier, was killed in Afghanistan on September 29th, 2007. Zack was the best man in our wedding, and one of both my and my husband's best friends from high school on. (Big Daddy on the left, Zack on the right)
There are so many memories, I could never begin to count them all. When I got the call that Zack was killed, my life changed. The world felt different without Zack in it.

A few nights after Zack passed, I had a dream that I was walking in the desert. I could hear Zack calling my name, and eventually could see him in the mirage walking toward me. He was in his Army clothes, healthy and beautiful. No matter how fast either of us moved toward each other, the distance between us stayed the same. He finally put his arms up, and a butterfly landed on his finger. That was all I remember of the dream.

At the funeral a few days later, there was a monarch butterfly fluttering around his coffin. Something inside of me knew this was Zack. I spoke to my friend Jen (also one of Zack's close friends), and we thought it was a beautiful connection to our friend.

In February, Jen was spearheading a project to have a monument placed at our high school in Zack's memory. When she was doing the walk around the school with the officials to pick a place to put this monument, she knew she had found the spot when she found a monarch butterfly perfectly preserved in a snowbank in the corner of the courtyard. This monument is there now, and the dedication was on May 30th:

At the beginning of this week, I had another dream. I was at a party at another one of our friend's houses, and many friends from high school were there. Many of these people are still friends of mine, and I had seen them at the dedication ceremony on May 30th. In my dream, the doorbell rang, and my friend that owned the house opened the door. Zack was standing there, but he was war-torn and his skin was blue, like I imagined he looked in death. Since I know in real life the places he was shot, I knew in my dream that he had been shot based on how he looked. I called to him. He didn't say anything to me, but everyone at this party looked at me like I was nuts. "Amanda, Zack is not there," my friend Steve said. "What are you talking about? He's right in front of you," I said to him. I went on trying to convince him, and by now everyone at the party had stopped all sound and were watching as Steve tried to convince me that nobody was there. But Zack and I looked at each other. Then, Zack raised his hands, just like he had in the dream I had months before. No butterfly this time. He just stood there with his hands raised up. Then the dream ended.

I went to work the following day and told my co-worker. She has been with me through this grieving process, and has been my rock as far as support. She simply said, after hearing all this, "Zack is trying to give you a message." "What is the message?" I asked her. "I dunno - but he is."

I spent the latter half of my week mulling this over, trying to figure out what this message could be. A couple nights ago, I was having a conversation about religion with another friend from work. We were discussing Heaven and Hell, and how one goes about getting "in" to Heaven, etc. She then says to me, "My husband feels that religion comes into play when someone needs comfort after a death."

As soon as she said this, I knew the message. It was as if the hand of God was directly on my shoulder, and Zack was the messenger.

In my first dream, Zack was alive and well. He was in Afghanistan in the desert. He knew he was about to die, so he put his hands up to Heaven. The butterfly that landed on his finger was there to carry his soul.

At the funeral, the butterfly was there - which was Zack's soul.

My second dream, Zack had passed away already. When I was the only one who could see him at the party, it was because I am "saved" - I have accepted Jesus Christ into my heart. I will go to Heaven. Zack is already there. The other people are not at the point spiritually that I am, so they couldn't see him. When he put up his hands again, it was him showing me that he was going to Heaven... toward the light.

The night that I had that conversation about Heaven, and it all became so clear to me, I could barely sleep. I felt so alive and full of God, and felt like I finally had an answer to my own spirituality.

And I had one more dream. Zack and I were in my driveway. I was excited, and asking him to tell me about Heaven, and who was there, and what it was like. I yammered on like an excited child - he was saying nothing - just looking at me. I finally stopped talking, and said, "You're leaving, aren't you." He said, "Yes." I said, "Where are you going?" He said, "Home." We hugged, and he walked away and faded into bright light in the distance.

I woke up feeling so much peace. I feel like my grieving process is over, and now I can focus on the happy memories, and look forward to going to Heaven myself. I also realize that the reason why death is so awful is because there is the fear of never seeing someone again - but now I know differently. The only way I won't see someone again is if they aren't going to Heaven, too.

If you're still with me, thank you for reading this. I really needed to share this story, because Zack's death has affected me so deeply these last several months. I've had to withdraw and focus on my family, and take lots of time to myself to mourn this loss, and figure out what it all means, but now I know. Now I am free, and Zack is, too. I know this much is true.

Idle Hands are the Devil's Workshop

But I have been anything but idle!Miss Lulu and Poppy have energy levels that are perfectly matched. Oh, sure, Lulu looks innocent enough in this pic - but let me tell you - coupled with a 4 year old, there is lots of action at our house! There has also been some unexpected sibling rivalry, if you will. Poppy is having some adjustment issues as he is not the "baby" anymore. Thankfully things come in phases, and phases pass. In the end I think they will be best buddies.

I have also been knitting! I have finished the Dream In Color Shrug except for the border. A picture is promised as soon as that is done. Because it is 101 degrees here the last couple days, I have some easy breezy knitting I've been doing:

Her original owner was no longer able to keep her, and after a strange twist of fate, she came home to us on Thursday night. Those Little Moments

One of the things I try to project on my blog is that I try to embrace life and enjoy each experience that comes my way. I really do love my life, family, friends, and all the emotional riches that come from these relationships.

This past weekend was one that was filled with lots of terrific little moments that added up to many of those riches I was just talking about. We were invited by my Mom to have a birthday party for my Dad at their camp, which is just 20 minutes from where we all live. I did A LOT of knitting on the Dream in Colour Shrug, which there are no photos of yet, but I'll show you some pics of other things that went on.

New Hampshire all my life - OK, there were 3 weeks in Florida, but that was only to get my man to move back to NH. That is another story.

Doing Things That Make Me Happy

Thanks for the funny comments on my Helmet Liner in my last post. You all crack me up! ha ha... I don't really rob banks, yes, it is warm now to be knitting something like that, and yes, my glasses would definitely give me away.

Saturday we headed up to Maine, but stopped at a great spot on the 17 mile stretch of NH coast - Odiorne Point State Park. It was a beautiful day. 65 degrees, full sun, and no breeze (uncommon for the coast!) We packed a picnic lunch, and brought a kite that we were unable to use due to no wind. We walked on the rocks, collected shells and seaglass, and watched the lobster boat checking traps. It was glorious.Then we drove into Maine and stopped at our favorite spot to say hello!

Watched the Red Sox win a double header, and had a nice evening with my boys. When all was quiet, I dyed some yarn (check the shop!). Also started knitting the Dream in Color Shrug for my Mom, which is also to satisfy a challenge in the Year Long Gift Along.

Today? Dyed more yarn. Relaxed. Knit. Enjoyed another Red Sox win. Watched "The Bucket List" again. If you haven't seen it, you should. You'll want to write yours. I have had one for a long time, and it makes all the difference in my life.

I Kissed An Alpaca

This day started different from most. Poppy slept until 7:30, which meant that I did, too! Big Daddy and Poppy got right to work making me breakfast while I was on the couch watching "Breakfast With the Sox."After a yummy breakfast burrito, and opening gifts, I was asked to get ready as we were going to the NH Sheep & Wool Festival! I hemmed and hawed the last few days because the weather has been a little cold and overcast, but Chan had nudged me to go if the opportunity to go presented itself, and it surely did - especially with 70 degree temp and full sun!

This is the first time Poppy has gone to S&W. He was more excited than I was (which I didn't think possible - I mean - HELLO! I am the knitter here!) We watched the sheep dog demonstrations, and he thought that was the greatest. Then he REALLY got excited when we were in the exhibit areas and he saw people spinning. He kept yelling, "I want to try it, I want to try it!" Yes, I think he will be a spinner. (Jessi, stop rubbing your hands together and snickering - we knew this day would come.) I didn't buy a wheel, but I can see that it is coming. I mean, Poppy really wants a wheel. Um, yeah, Poppy wants the wheel.

Then we went to the Alpaca area. These are the second sweetest animals ever (right after sheep)... We were at the booth for Fraggle Rock Farm, and the owners suggested feeding the sweeties some hay, and this one sweet Alpaca came right up to me. The owner said "If we let her get close enough, she'll let you kiss her." I couldn't refuse:The only thing that took Poppy's eyes off the wheel was the Alpaca!You're probably wondering what I bought. Well, not a thing. I know, I know... I have a tendency to get fiber coma at these kinds of things, and find it impossible to make a decision of what to buy. So, I don't get anything. The way I have taken care of this is that I take a business card and write down the things I see at a particular booth that I think I may want, and at the end, if I can look at the card and remember what that item was to the point that I feel I need it, then I go back. Well, except for $300+ wheels and $500 animals, I didn't feel the need for anything. And you can imagine that Big Daddy wasn't going to try to fit an Alpaca into the truck (though the image of an Alpaca looking out of our sunroof is funny).

When we got home I knit outside for an hour. Yes, I finally did it! After a nice dinner and some terrific time with my family (Mom/Dad, Sis/hub came over), I snuggled into bed with Poppy and he fell into a blissful sleep.

I hope you all had as nice of a Mother's Day as I did. And, I appreciate the supportive comments and emails about me not being online as much. It makes it much more productive and enjoyable when I do go online now.

Well, we have been having April showers that have continued right into May! There have been some nice days in between, but on the weekends it has been all rain. Lately we've been playing wii, and I've been reading. As soon as the rain halts, I've been running out to the garden.

The Quick & Skinny

When I declared that I would be spending less time online a couple posts ago, I only half believed myself. My laptop and I were literally joined at the hip to the point of no productivity, and it had to end - I just didn't think I would enjoy the break so much.

So, the quick & skinny?

*** I have been working in my yard - A LOT.

*** Worked way too many hours the last two weeks at the desk job. I don't know how two 40 hour/week parents do it. I missed Poppy SO MUCH. (was only covering my secretary's vacation - I'm not extending my hours - NO WAY NO HOW!)

*** Moved my yarn studio into another room. I'm in fiber Heaven. Much more light in the "new" studio, and a window, too. Won't need to be in the kitchen anymore.

*** Jumped in and started homeschooling. Phonics and telling time are on the plan for now. We're also learning about gardening.

*** Sending out my Coffee Swap package at the end of the week. Getting it all packed up. First box ended up being too small for all the goodies. I don't think my pal will mind.

*** No knitting. Come on, do you think I'd have time with all this other stuff going on? ((wink))

*** Prepping an obscene amount of yarn to dye. If you're waiting for a proper update, it is coming.

Coffee Swap Weekly Topic

Let's pretend for a minute we all live in the home of our dreams, have land, and don't have to work so time is unlimited! It's Spring planting season! What would you grow? A little veggie garden? A bed of bright spring blooms? Or is your thumb so far from green that the only thing you'd be planting is your tushy into a nice chair on the porch to get some knitting or crocheting done in the nice breeze?

The home of my dreams is on the beach. I'd love to have window boxes that I could change the flowers in as the seasons change so I could capture blooms all year. I'd also like to have a big trellis with beautiful Morning Glories all over it. I'd have some kind of swing chair with a cup holder and footstool so I could look toward the ocean where my Poppy and Big Daddy would be flying a kite or building a sand castle. This dream could go on forever! ha ha...

Yes, I've been home from Boston for 6 days, but guess what? Big Daddy scored some box seats to see the Red Sox tomorrow night - which means we're going back there tomorrow afternoon for the third time in ten days.

I did get my order from Jessi at Alabama Fiber Dreams. She has INCREDIBLE hand-spun yarns. Admittedly, I have been taking a bit of a break from a lot of things in life lately. Remember how awful March was for me? Well, something I realized was how much pressure I was putting on myself to do too much. A few of you have commented how you can't believe how much I can do at one time, and ask how I manage to do so much. Truth is, I can't. Eventually something has to give. So, I have taken a break from having to dye every weekend, and having to knit everyday, and having to post on my blog every couple days.

I've also cut down on the amount of time I spend on the laptop each evening. Do any of you do this? You sit down to check your email, and two hours later, you're still sitting there, only you've still not finished your email and you've read every forum on Ravelry? Yah - that's me, too. So, I stick to the task, read/comment on my blogs, and put the computer away. The amount of time I have added to my evening has been incredible.

That being said, I'm putting the computer down for the night.

This morning I sip my coffee looking out of the window of my room of the Seaport Hotel in Boston. Wanna see what I am seeing?
Yes, I think it's awesome, too. Big Daddy is working at a business meeting for his company, and asked me to tag along. I will not be going to any of the business things, I'm only here to relax and take a little intermission from normal life.

So, for today, I'll be knitting, reading, napping, and blogging. Tomorrow, back to real life. And, I'll be ready.

A Little Bit of This and That

This weekend I did a little bit of this:

Then tag five other people to do the same.

Well, I have been doing that, too - reading, that is. So, my book is The Last Time They Met by Anita Shreve.

And then it was fall, and he had enrolled at Harvard. She had chosen Middlebury. He'd made himself give it up then, accept her silence as his punishment.

And, my last bit for this short post is my Coffee Swap Topic of the Week:

Tell us how you started drinking coffee. Were you in high school or college and making it through all nighters? Did you get it from a family member? What drives your love of the bean?

I started drinking coffee when we got our Keurig machine. I finally (FINALLY) figured out how I "like" my coffee, and could get it to taste the same each time. In a traditional coffee pot, it was either pond water or jet fuel when I would make it. This drove me nuts. So, it was about a year ago, and now I have 1-3 cups a day, depending on the day of the week. It suits my "I can't sleep" lifestyle. I have never slept well, even before the days of coffee, so at least now I can be more awake when I am up all night reading, knitting, or folding laundry.

Speaking of Coffee Swap, my pal, Grace, sent me another fun package! Needles, chocolate, and some terrific craft scissors. Thank you, once again!

Oh, Boston, You're My Home

OK, so by now you're all tired of me complaining about my everlasting New England winter. Apparently, the Man upstairs was, too.

Poppy LOVES LOVES LOVES the Museum of Science in Boston. So, when he started clamoring last night to go, we figured "OK" since it was supposed to rain and be crappy all weekend. As we drove into Boston this morning (we live about 60 miles away), we couldn't see the skyline until we were on the very edge of the city because the fog was so thick.

We arrived at the museum around 9:30, and headed into the exhibit halls. Now, there are no windows except for the very middle rotunda. About an hour later, we walked through the windowed area, and I looked up to see that the sky was blue - not a cloud in it! Well, only one thing to do in this situation... GO EXPLORE THE CITY!

We hopped on the "T" and headed to Quincy Market for lunch, then walked to Boston Common so Poppy could go to the awesome playground there.

The best part? At least 75 degree weather! NO JOKE! I was in Heaven. And, so was he:

Week #2 Spring Fling Yarn and Coffee Swap topic of the week is up: Since some of us is beginning to see glimpse of Spring, while others are still getting snow have you change what projects are working on? Have you put away the hats, scarfs and mittens, and brought out the cute tank top sweater projects and lacy wraps? Have you change yarn to something more lighter and cooler, not so heavy and bulky? My knitting plans have not changed at all, as I'm doing the "Year Long Gift Along" and my "must knit" list for the year has been done for months. I do plan to knit a tank top for myself this summer, which is totally because we'll be in that season.

The Wuzzleburg Garden that Poppy and I have planted is coming along nicely. If the snowbank would just melt, we could start transplanting to the outdoor garden. Hey, no snow for 6 days now! WOO HOO!

Hello from NH Knitting Mama Land. The fog has lifted, and an appropriate update is overdue. Grab your favorite beverage... I'll wait.

OK, because we are still having winter here in New Hampshire, Poppy and I went to the store to buy seeds to start in our indoor greenhouse. This is our Wuzzleburg Garden.We have planted Morning Glories, Sunflowers, Impatiens, Four O'Clocks, and are nurturing a plant I had at my office that was not doing well.

I've had some terrific feedback about homeschooling from Kelly and KM. Thank you so much, ladies, for your help and guidance! This is certainly helpful to begin the homeschool journey with support from other homeschooling parents.

Megan Update: She LOVES all the hats and other goodies that we put together for her. The other day I received a box in the mail from Cynthia (thank you!) , which contained this beautiful blanket and bead kit. Be sure to check out her blog to read about her wonderful charity, Warming Grace.

Another package I received this week was my Coffee Swap Swag. Grace had some K-cups sent to me, and included many varieties of both coffee and tea. I'm so excited to try them out! I also received this great box of goodies that had a cute knit bunny, and lots of cocoa and tea yummies. Also had a journal and 2 hanks of Knit Picks yarn to dye up! Thank you so much, Grace!I love my Keurig machine - it makes a consistently good cup of coffee and tea, and I don't end up with a pot of coffee that gets burnt from sitting on the burner. Thank you, Grace!

Still no knitting going on, but I did spend a good deal of time working on administrative things for the shop last night. I have some new dyes coming, as well as some new packaging! I'm pretty excited. I anticipate a big update in a couple weeks - sooner if my packages come quickly.

Foolin' Around Today

I laughed a lot today. Received a funny email from Mary. Got distraced by Google Chat (thanks, Jessi!) Played outside for a few with Poppy. OPENED WINDOWS! Yes, it was 60 degrees this afternoon. What a mood booster! This was just the kind of day I have been needing for a while.

Bea gave me a nudge to enter her contest this afternoon. You should, too! Tell your friends! Tell her I sent you!

What else is new? Not a lot from the last post. Still no knitting, just lots of dyeing, working, and being a mom/wife. I have been trying to investigate different curriculums to use for homeschooling - what a daunting task. Anyone have advice on a good system? So far I like the looks of the Sonlight program, but it is expensive!

Friday

Broken record: difficult couple of weeks here. Spent the week recovering from the two lousy weeks preceeding this one. I ended up taking the easy route and shipping all my problems to God to deal with for a few days. When they came back, they were a lot smaller and more manageable!

As a bonus for keeping the faith, Big Daddy was finally awarded a major promotion he had been working toward for several months. This will afford us some opportunities that we hadn't dared to dream about. Does it mean I can be home yet? Nope, but I have been given some peace about that from the man upstairs, too. I feel it's in the cards, just not yet. Patience is one of the hardest virtues for me, so this should be an interesting ride!

On the fiber front, I have NOTHING on the needles. Of course, my last project for March is due on Monday, and I have not started it yet. This is very unlike me, as usually I have things done well ahead of time. It's just another thing that I have had to accept as of late - I will be under the gun on this one. At least it's a knitting project and not something major. I do have some orders to ship, and some orders to dye. It will all happen this weekend.

A little eye candy: Chan and I are swapping some yarn, and my package arrived today: Cherry Tree Hill Supersock. I have never owned my own skein of this, but now I can't put it down. Has just the colors I enjoy, too. A bit of a limey yellow, aqua, and a touch of pea green. Va Va Va Voom! I LOVE IT! Thanks, Chan! I promise your package will be worth the wait.

I'm looking forward to finding out who my partner is for the Coffee Swap. I've already started putting together some goodies (see, I am usually early on things!). If you happen to be visiting because of the swap - welcome!

I'm off to rest for the evening. I have bought an album from one of my new "favorite" bands off iTunes: Far-Less. Saw them last week when I was seeing another one of my favorites, Mae.

Easter Preparation

Yesterday afternoon, Mom and I had a conversation about the time line of what happened when as far as the events leading up to Easter. So as to not get too religious, in the days leading up to Jesus's death, things were not going too well for him. Then he was put to death on Good Friday, and resurrected on Easter.

The past couple of weeks have been difficult for me emotionally. I won't whine and bore you with the the details of things I haven't shared on here, but I could use a little resurrection of my spirits.

Sooooo, last night Big Daddy and I went to Boston with our best friend (who lives there). We went out to eat at Ruth's Chris Steak House, which is my favorite restaurant on the planet. After that, on to Starbucks for much needed brew, and lastly, to the Middle East to see one of my favorite bands, Mae. Definitely a night full of good times, and little sleep. The show didn't end until 1:15am, and by the time we were back at our friend's place, it was 2:00am. Even when I was younger and at "the age" where that kind of thing was supposed to be normal I had a hard time doing all nighters! ha ha... so you can guess how old I felt last night. Especially at a standing room only show for 5 hours!

Now onto POPPY. This kids lights up my life. For the past week, he has talked about how excited he is to color and decorate his Easter eggs - to the point where he was carrying around his PAAS kit everywhere. He was in his glory tonight at my folk's house, and I am proud to say that he has mad dyeing skills like his Momma!Just check out this happy face!
As soon as Poppy FINALLY went to bed tonight, the bunny came. We're not big on candy here - "Electric Chips" are much more of a hit.And, each of the 12 plastic eggs that are all over the living room has Chuck E Cheese tokens in them. Should be a pleasing Easter morning to our sweet boy.

As far as knitting? Nothing since I finished the Calorimetry last weekend. Dyeing? None of that, either. Stay tuned - I'm back on the horse.

Wow, you have all been so fantastic in reaching out with your messages and emails about my kitty boy. I really appreciate it. It's amazing how many of us have been in that situation where we've had to make that decision.

So, I'm coming back to the land of the living. The night was spent packing up orders, doing bills, and all the other things that stack up if you don't attend to it each day (like laundry!)

I'm behind on blog reading, but did want to alert you to a contest that my dear friend Chan is hosting. Go check it out, and wish her a Happy Blogiversary!

Goodbye, Furry Friend

I haven't been much for talking the last few days. Our beloved kitty had been ill, and yesterday we had the difficult task of helping him pass on. This is truly the end of an era in our home, as Big Daddy had the cat longer than we've been together, and we've been together 11 years now. I still think I hear him walking around. I still look for him when I get home in the afternoon. I miss my friend.

Enough stitch markers to mark every stitch of a 10 foot wide afghan? I have a few tape measures now, but I am enjoying my stitch markers, because the ones I have received have all been special. I never seem to have enough little pairs of craft scissors, though.

You walk into the yarn shop and have exactly and only enough money to purchase 2 skeins of yarn in their 2 for 20 special they have going..The choices are a soft, thick cotton/viscose blend in your favorite colors, slightly variegated..a beautiful sock yarn that's just squishy and sproingy in your hands.. a soft, worsted weight wool like malabrigo.. and a lovely bamboo blend with colors to just die for. Which do you walk out the door with? I would get the bamboo blend because I have not tried bamboo yet.

Spring

1. We're starting sign-ups on the first day of Spring - is it already truly Spring-like where you are? Absolutely NO!

3. What do you most look forward to about springtime? Opening the windows of the house

5. The day after, it's going to be cooler and pouring down rain - does that impact your mood? How do you spend that day? what helps cheer you up? Doen't usually impact mood. Would spend the day playing with my son indoors and knitting while he naps.

It's Fun To Receive, Too!

My Mom has been busy. She is single-handedly accessorizing my house with her crochet goodies.

I am a bit of a sunflower nut. Mom found an adorable pattern to make these kitchen scrubbie cloths, but I think they're too cute to use. So, she is making me several of them so I can hang them on the sides of my cupboards in the kitchen over the sink. She also made me a set of placemats for my dining room, and potholders (not pictured).On the yarn front, Chan sent me a skein of Tofutsies to try. I am a Tofutsie virgin, and have been wanting to try (it's my colors, too!) I am anxious to get some knitting done, too. I have 3 FO's to get done before the end of the month so I can be entered into the Year Long Gift Along challenge. I even bought the yarn already. The Tweedle Dee is go make mittens to go with my Mom's Nomad Hat and Scarf that I completed a few weeks ago. The Vanna's Choice (which is a new yarn to me) is for a Helmet Liner for my Dad to use while he snowblows.

There is also a bunch of new yarn coming to the shop over the next few days!

First of all, thank you to EVERYONE who contributed to "Hats Off To Megan" - Your generousity has been phenomenal. I'm waiting on a couple more hats to come, but so far the count is:

I am going out to get a nice basket or gift box, then they'll be sent to Megan. The latest update is that she has developed pneumonia, and had to have a procedure to have her port used for chemo moved. I received my Hot Cocoa Swap package from Sharon last week. One of the fun things the organizers have asked is if we can show our Blah Buster Buddy adjusting to their new homes.

My buddy is Baby Buttons. (This is lambing season, after all!) Baby Buttons was happy to come live here, as I am the caretaker of Mr. and Mrs. Buttons, and they were happy to be able to adopt this little one.

Baby Buttons sure gets into things (just like any curious little one!) I can't keep him out of the studio. He gets into my dyepots, and likes to sit in the newly dyed yarns, too.

I think I'll have to baby proof the house again!

Oh, By The Way

I wanted to remind you that the "Hats Off to Megan" deadline is fast approaching. I am giving the hats to Megan's aunt over the weekend (she will be seeing her and can pass them on), so need them by Friday in order to have them in the basket. The response has been overwhelming, and I thank you all for your contributions. I'm in the process of putting together an ENORMOUS post that lists everyone that sent a hat (and of course there will be a pic of all the hats together!)

We survived the storm last night. I took some pics out the back slider around 10:00. This was natural light back there - and it was amazing how light it was outside because of the brightness of the snow.We were also startled a couple times because the weight of the snow on the branches caused them to break and crash to the ground. Luckily there is plenty of distance between the trees and the house.

You Know Me and GOALS

Wayyyyyyyyy back on January 1st, I sat down and listed my personal goals for the year, complete with a worksheet on how I would accomplish each. 2 months later? IT'S WORKING!

I want to try to dye more, and be able to list a new yarn each day. I know - pretty lofty idea, but we all have to start somewhere! I have been listing quite a bit of stuff since the weekend, and I've been dyeing, too. Just finished re-skeining a bunch of goodies. Here is a peek of a few pretties that will be added over the next week. 3 ply merino superwash, 450 yards each.

I'd like to be able to knit more, and so far I'm cooking along on the Year Long Gift Along (see the post for my knitting list for the year!)

Last but not least - and this may seem silly - I'd like to be able to see the front of my house again. 6 more inches expected tonight.

DING DONG - Mail Call!

I am so excited, my Hot Cocoa Swap package came today! Sharon spoiled me silly! 2 varieties of Ghiaradelli hot cocoa (my fave!), lots of notions, a cute mug, a tote bag, and oodles of her wonderful soaps and bath products.

This totally made my day. We have another half-a-foot of snow on the ground, and I'm just about wintered out. Now I can drink some yummy cocoa and melt my winter-angst away. This is TRULY a blah-buster package. Thank you, Sharon!

Fetching

I finished "Fetching." What a fantastic little project. I think this took about 8 hours of knitting (3 long-ish movies). Fantastic knit... the hype is right on.

Gave them as a gift to my dear friend, Joyce, today. I hope she enjoys them!

Goodie Goodie

I have been dragging my feet on doing this post while waiting on my Hot Cocoa Swap package, but since there is no mail today, I figure I'll show you a couple of packages I received last week.

Holly sent me this sweet treat for Valentine's Day. (Those chocolates are SO GONE!) Thank you for thinking of me!!!

I also received a belated birthday package from Terrie. A notions bag, and the most adorable little sheep stitch markers. I love love love them! She also sent some new crayons and a dinosaur coloring book for Poppy, which he started using right away. Am I spoiled or what? Thank you, Terrie!

I have been knitting more than I have ever knitted in my life. I finished Fetching today, but they are on the blocking board, and will be gifted soon. I'm now prepping more yarn for the biggest update ever set for a week or two from now. There is a lot of work going into this batch as far as color choices and types of fiber. So, if you've been waiting for something new and fresh in the shop, I promise that it is coming - and it will be worth it!

Happiness Is... Finished Objects

The worst part of gift knitting is that you have to wait to post your FO's until they have been given to the recipient. And that is hard for me, because FO's make me so happy and excited, and I want to share! Well, today is the big day for me... I get to post about two!

The first one was for Cat, my Hot Cocoa Swap pal. We named him "Mr. Ram," and after reading Cat's blog the last couple of posts, see that Mr. Ram has settled in nicely. He was made from some supplies I had in my stash for needle-felting. If you've never tried it before, I highly recommend it - very fun and a bit therapeutic (except for the occasional poke to one's own finger).

Next FO is the Nomad Hat and Scarf from Interweave Knits. The main modification I did was add a couple extra rows per pattern repeat on the hat part, as I had read that the hat wasn't deep enough as written. I used Moda Dea "Tweedle Dee" yarn, 2 skeins in color Grape Jam. This was for my Momma for her birthday, and it fit perfectly.

Since receiving my iPod Touch a couple weeks ago, I have developed a serious addiction to podcasts -

I like Sticks & String. David does a lot of interviews with other knitters and people in the business, which I think is enjoyable.

Many of you may already know Gnat of Bark n Knit has started a podcast, too! She has a mix of dog talk and knitting, which is like sitting with your best friend in a cafe.

The best thing? No music! I tried many more podcasts than I list here, but I tend to not like the ones that have long songs, or multiple songs throughout the podcast. If I want to listen to music, I'll put on my tunes that are in my iPod! David has music in his, but it is of a relaxing nature (classical from what I have listened to so far), and that is an okay break for me. I would rather hear more show in that time, but it's such a great podcast that the music is tolerable.

I have received a couple great packages in the mail, but I'm dragging my feet to post about them because I'm waiting for my Hot Cocoa Swap package to arrive (which I hope is soon!)...

I'm off to work on Fetching, my WIP. It's another birthday gift that I need to get done pronto, but I have read that it is a great quick knit.
